Father, William Herbert Merriman, served RAF 1939 - 1945. Grandfather William Joseph, Born India but his family from Bristol area. His uncle went to USA and married into one of the cement company families. Myself have served in the RAF and travelled around UK.

My father was John Charles Merriman Traill and I have just received a photo of a C.H. Merriman in Army (British) Uniform taken in 1916. Any clues? I don't know the connection between Merriman and Traill. Father came from Scotland. He was born on 1880 in Kirkwall - Orkney Is.

The Winston Churchill document is very interesting. Perhaps you should show the names as Merriman Curtis, however, instead of Curtis Merriman. I have a copy of the Merriman Reunion book. There was a Merriman Reunion held in 1913 in Wallingford, CT. The book has considerable documentation on the Merrimans. Perhaps I could create PDF files for you. It traces Nathaniels ancestors in England back about a hundred years before his birth in 1613. Mary Merriman was born in New Haven, CT on 12 July 1657, baptized there on 27 Jine 1661 and Married in Wallingford on 9 June 1674 to Thomas Curtis, son of John and Elizabeth (Welles) Curtis. Thomas Curtis was born at Stratford, CT 14 Jan 1648. Mary was the fifth child of Nathaniel Merriman. Mary had 12 children and Nathaniel was her second child. I do not have a date of Mary's death. There will probably be another reunion in 2013 also in Wallingford. Natheniel landed in Boston on the ship "Whale" on May 26, 1632 (NOT NC as your website.)

Hi. I'm researching my family history and have an interesting connection to a Thomas Merriman said to have been a ship's carpenter in the UK Royal Navy who married a distant ancestor of mine, Violet Edgar, in June 1901 at Portsmouth UK. Rumour has it he took her to Orkney and abandoned her there ! Was this because he was posted to Scapa Flow with the Navy or because he was one of the Orkney Merrimans or related to them ? My Nana has done some good research into our name. She says that the strain of Merriman that I am from actually originated in the Shetland Island north of Scotland. The name was given to a Norwegian sailor who lost his ship and washed ashore. Lucky he lived. That family travelled with Captain Sir James Douglas from England to Victoria on Vancouver Island, British Columbia in the very early 1800s. The first Merriman in Victoria was Peter Merriman. He was also one of the very earliest European settlers on Vancouver Island. My family has been in Victoria for six generations. That is as long as Europeans have been here.

Kevin is the youngest of 6 born to Stanley Merriman who was born in England. My Great Grand parents came to N Z from NewnhamGloucester In England, there names were Thomas Merriman his wife was Matilda Bennett which was his 2nd wife his 1st wife was Mary Ann Mobberley who died shortly after my Grand Father Albert Merriman was born. The arrived here on the ship Opawa they arrived in nz on the friday of the 28 nov 1879. they settled in a town called Greymouth. He was invited here by the NZ govenment to help with the coal mining here. So I am a direct decendent of him and Mary Ann Mobberley. Thomases Fathers name was Henry. This is the second time I've visitied this site. My great grandfather's name was John Henry Merriman, date & place of birth unkown. He was a soldier in the British army, 63rd Regiment of Foot, and he married a Mary Casey - possibly Irish? - and they had a son, George William Merriman, my grandfather, at Carlton in Nottingham in 1857. He had retired from the army by then & died soon after Grandad was born. I have a hunch - based on nothing at all except his wife's maiden name - that he may have been Irish. As a member of the English branch of this family I have found the site very interesting. My late father`s relatives emigrated during the depression in the 20`s. What a wonderful site. I was born in Toronto, Canada. At one time all of the Merrimans in the Toronto area were related to me. My father was born in London, England in 1906 to Charles Matthew Merriman b. 1870 Cambridge England and Mary Ann Fensom b. 1875 London. I was told that many of the siblings of Charles Matthew immigrated to Australia. Does this bit of information fit in with any of the Merrimans out there?

Feel free to update the info you have on John Mark Merriman. He is the adopted son of John & Gladys (deceased) Merriman of Victoria BC. He is the adopted brother of Glyndwr and Garreth (deceased). He has four children, Joanna Marie, Sandra Ellen, Miranda Dayle & Ethan Alexander, all living in Cold Lake AB. Johnmark was reunited with his birth mother, Dorothy and two half sisters, Nancy and Nicole (all in Victoria BC) on Feb 17 2000. He has changed his surname from Merriman to Adams.

well, the very most earliest origin of the name merriman is from normandy, france. it first started as merium or meriom. it was a name of some nobleman in normandy. that took place at the year 1640. later, english generals called their troops :"merry man", and that name got adapted too. some sources say that merriman is a viking name.

With reference to my preceding comment, my father, Humphrey Hugh is no. 388 in the "Pedigree of the Family of Merriman". It seems a real shame to end the records there.
