It appears the Merriman name was concentrated in specific areas of the country. Pembroke having the most (148), then Gloucester(124), Stafford(103), Worcester(94), Glamorgan(81), Leicester(79) and surprisingly Orkney in Scotland also having 79.  Is this indicative of where the name originated? It could be. Famous Merrimans or at least a few of those who made it into historical documents.

Other Merriman Branches

The name Merriman appears world wide but the majority of us link up to one of a few places of origin. There appears to be a number of different branches of the Merriman Family including the following:

1. Descendants of Thomas Merriman of the Merrimans of Witney, Oxford, which branched to the following:

   • The Merrimans of Newbury and Marlborough, including Sir Frank Boyd and descendants of Capt. John Merriman and...

   • Descendants of Nathaniel Merriman of Wallingford CT, b. 1613 in England and emigrated to New England, USA. It was brought to my attention some of this information is copyright protected so I removed the majority of it from the site. Over the next while I will be adding small amounts as I get permission and build links to sites with more information.

2. Descendants of Richard Merryman b. in 1714 in Maxey, England. 

3. Descendants of John Merryman born about 1600, England and died in Virginia, USA.

4. Descendants of Merrimans in Orkney, Scotland. The earliest I have seen so far is the christening of Alexr. Merriman 15 Aug 1657. Father Andro Merriman. It would be interesting to know when the earliest Merrimans were recorded as living in the Orkney Islands and where they came from. 5. Also, there is a large group of Merrimans in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Did the name start there or did they come from England?

6. Believe it or not but there are Irish Merrimans are also world wide with many claiming a connection to Brian Merriman the famous Irish poet. One small tree shows descendants of Walter Merryman b. in Ireland before 1700 and died in Maine, USA.

• The FreeBMD Project's objective is to provide free Internet access to the Civil Registration index information for England and Wales. The Civil Registration system for recording births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales has been in place since 1837 and is one of the most significant single resources for genealogical research back to Victorian times. I haven't found much help on it so far but you might.
• Ancestry.com limited access unless you buy a membership but they have approx. 25 million names in their registry which is accessible for free.
• Commonwealth War Graves Commission with a searchable listing of all casualties from the World Wars. Very good resource.
• The German War Graves Commission similar to the Commonwealth site but in German of course.
• Kindred Konnections
• Gloucestershire census reports on line for everyone to access, all transcribed by Gordon Beavington.
• Ontario Canada 1871 Index to its Census for that year. Searchable.
