  • Merriman Soldiers, Canadians who served in WW1.
  • Merriman Immigrants to the USA.
  • Distribution of Merrimans in Wales, Scotland and England in 1881. It appears the Merriman name was concentrated in specific areas of the country. Pembroke having the most (148), then Gloucester(124), Stafford(103), Worcester(94), Glamorgan(81), Leicester(79) and surprisingly Orkney in Scotland also having 79.  Is this indicative of where the name originated? It could be.
  • Famous Merrimans or at least a few of those who made it into historical documents.

Other Merriman Branches

The name Merriman appears world wide but the majority of us link up to one of a few places of origin. There appears to be a number of different branches of the Merriman Family including the following:

  1. Descendants of Thomas Merriman of the Merrimans of Witney, Oxford, which branched to the following:

  2. Descendants of Richard Merryman b. in 1714 in Maxey, England.

  3. Descendants of John Merryman born about 1600, England and died in Virginia, USA.

  4. Descendants of Merrimans in Orkney, Scotland. The earliest I have seen so far is the christening of Alexr. Merriman 15 Aug 1657. Father Andro Merriman. It would be interesting to know when the earliest Merrimans were recorded as living in the Orkney Islands and where they came from. It appears the name probably originated there as well as in England.  If you have this information you can email me at .

  5. Also, there is a large group of Merrimans in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Did the name start there or did they come from England?

  6. Believe it or not but there are Irish Merrimans are also world wide with many claiming a connection to Brian Merriman the famous Irish poet. One small tree shows descendants of Walter Merryman b. in Ireland before 1700 and died in Maine, USA.
